Monumental 19th Century Ashford Marble Obelisk
A very handsome pietra dura obelisk of large scale. This Ashford black marble obelisk is inlaid with a wide variety of specimen stone including malachite, lapis lazuli and agate. Obelisks of this kind were very popular in the 19th century and followed the form of tapering columns in ancient civilizations seen on the Grand Tour.
This monumental antique obelisk, which stands at 76 cm, is in excellent condition and is raised on a stepped square black marble base. It is unusal to have such a large example of an Ashford marble obelisk, most are half the size of this one.
An elegant and imposing object to be a focal point wherever it is displayed.
