19th Century Papier Mache Chinoiserie Tray
A really stunning Victorian papier mache tray with a charming chinoiserie design. This is a wonderful example of 19th Century papier mache work, featuring a traditional, stylised scene on a well proportioned rectangular tray with rounded corners. The delightful scene is set within a beautiful oriental garden with figures, blossoms, foliage, bridges and swans. The decoration is in very good condition and the colours used, green, red, pale blue and gilt, contrast beautifully with the black japanned background. This antique tray is a good size and in good condition, there are two small areas of minor wear to the back of the tray, but these do not affect the appearance of the tray at all. This highly decorative chinoiserie tray would make a dramatic wall decoration or charming coffee table.
